Dress Size Chart: What Is My Dress Size?

Enter your bust, waist and hip measurements and get your US dress size, letter size, UK and EU sizes and jeans size, plus the full women’s size chart.

A size 8 at one store is a size 6 at another. That is why the only size that really matters is the one that matches your measurements. Type in your bust, waist and hips, and this calculator gives you your US dress size, letter size, UK and EU sizes, plus your jeans size.

How to measure yourself

Use a soft tape measure. Stand straight, breathe out normally and keep the tape level all the way around. It should be snug but not tight.

Bust. Around the fullest part of your chest, with the tape straight across your back.

Waist. Around the narrowest part of your torso, usually an inch or so above your belly button.

Hips. Around the fullest part of your hips and seat, with your feet together.

Measure over underwear or thin clothing. A sweater can add an inch or more.

This is a typical US chart. Every brand is a little different, and some run a full size larger or smaller. Use your result as your starting point, then check the brand’s own chart before you buy.

Jeans size chart (women)

Jeans are often sized by waist in inches instead of dress size. A rough guide: waist 25 is a US 0, 26 is a 2, 27 is a 4, 28 is a 6, 29 is an 8, 31 is a 12, and 32 is a 14. Stretch denim can fit a size smaller than rigid denim. If you are between sizes in rigid jeans, size up.

What if your measurements land in different sizes?

That is normal. Most people are not the same size on top and bottom.

For dresses, buy the size that fits your largest measurement. A tailor can take in a waist easily. Letting out a seam is much harder, and sometimes impossible.

For tops, go by your bust. For skirts and pants, go by your waist and hips.

For wrap dresses and stretchy fabrics, you can often size down one, because the fabric gives.

If your top and bottom sizes are very different, separates and wrap styles will usually fit better than fitted one-piece dresses. See our plus size outfit ideas and casual outfit ideas for looks that work across sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I figure out my dress size? −
Measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape measure, then match each number to a size chart. For dresses, pick the size that fits your largest measurement and have the rest taken in.
What size is a US 8 in UK and EU? −
A US 8 is usually a UK 12 and an EU 40. As a rule of thumb, add 4 to the US size for UK sizing and add 32 for EU sizing, but always check the brand chart.
What size is medium in women’s clothing? −
Medium usually covers US sizes 8 to 10, which is a bust of about 36 to 37 inches, a waist of 28 to 29 inches and hips of 38.5 to 39.5 inches.
What if my bust and hips are different sizes? −
That is common. For tops go by bust, for skirts and pants go by waist and hips, and for dresses buy the larger size and tailor the rest. Wrap dresses and stretchy fabrics are more forgiving.
What jeans size is a size 8? −
A US size 8 is usually a 29 in jeans. A size 4 is about a 27, and a size 12 is about a 31. Stretch denim may fit a size smaller.
Why is my size different at every store? −
Brands use their own fit models and charts, and some cut larger on purpose. Your measurements do not change, so compare them to each brand’s chart instead of relying on a number.
