Capsule Wardrobe Checklist: 32 Pieces

Tick what you already own and the list shows what is missing, in the order worth buying. Your browser remembers your ticks, so you can shop from it over a few months.

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of pieces that all work together. The point is not owning less for the sake of it. The point is that every top goes with every bottom, so getting dressed takes two minutes instead of twenty.

This checklist has 32 pieces. Tick what you already own and the list tells you what is missing, in the order worth buying. Your browser remembers the ticks, so you can come back to it.

How to use the list

Do not buy 32 things. Most people already own half of this, and the gaps are usually in shoes and outerwear rather than tops.

Start by ticking what you own. Then look at what is missing and ask one question about each piece: would I wear this three times in the next month? If the answer is no, it stays on the list until the season changes.

Buy in this order when money is tight: shoes first, then outerwear, then bottoms, then tops. Shoes and coats are in every outfit you wear, so they do the most work. A fifth white t-shirt does not.

What makes a capsule actually work

One color story. Pick two neutrals as your base, say black and cream, or navy and camel. Then add two or three colors you genuinely like. If a new piece does not go with your base, it is a separate outfit, not a capsule piece.

Fit over brand. A cheap pair of pants hemmed to the right length looks better than an expensive pair that pools at the ankle. Budget for a tailor, even twenty dollars a piece.

Fabric you can wash. Dry-clean-only pieces sit in the closet. Cotton, merino, denim and good jersey get worn.

Your real life, not an imagined one. If you work from home in leggings four days a week, your capsule needs four comfortable outfits and one smart one, not the other way round.

Seasonal swaps

You do not need two capsules. You need about six pieces that rotate.

In summer, swap the wool coat and ankle boots out for sandals and a lighter jacket. Add a second slip dress or a pair of shorts if you wear them. In winter, add a chunky knit, tights and a scarf, and put the sandals away.

Everything else stays. That is the sign a capsule is working: the base does not change, only the layers around it.

Three mistakes people make

Buying the whole list at once. You end up with 32 pieces that are new and none that are tested. Add one or two a month.

Copying someone else’s capsule. A capsule built for a New York winter and an office job will not survive a warm climate and a school run.

Throwing out everything first. Keep what you wear, even if it is not on the list. The list is a floor, not a rule. Our capsule wardrobe guide walks through building one from what you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a capsule wardrobe? −
It is a small set of clothes chosen so every piece works with every other piece. Most versions run between 30 and 40 items, not counting underwear, gym clothes or occasion wear.
How many pieces should a capsule wardrobe have? −
Thirty to forty is the usual range, and this checklist uses 32. The number matters less than the mixing: if each top goes with each bottom, a smaller closet still gives you dozens of outfits.
What should I buy first for a capsule wardrobe? −
Shoes and outerwear. They appear in every outfit you wear, so they change more looks than another top would. After that, fill in bottoms, then tops.
Do I need a separate capsule for each season? −
No. Keep one base and rotate about six pieces. Swap a wool coat and boots for sandals and a light jacket in summer, and add a chunky knit and a scarf in winter.
How do I pick colors for a capsule wardrobe? −
Choose two neutrals as your base, such as black and cream or navy and camel, then two or three colors you actually like wearing. Anything that does not go with your base is a separate outfit, not a capsule piece.
Does a capsule wardrobe have to be expensive? −
No. Fit matters more than brand, so budget for small alterations instead of designer labels. A hemmed pair of cheap pants looks better than expensive pants that drag on the floor.
