Protein or Moisture Quiz: What Does My Hair Need?

Eight quick questions, including the strand stretch test, tell you whether your hair needs protein, moisture or neither right now, with a simple plan for your next wash day.

Hair that feels dry is not always thirsty, and hair that feels soft is not always healthy. Many hair problems come down to one balance: protein for strength and moisture for flexibility. When one side wins, hair breaks, frizzes or goes limp.

Answer eight quick questions, including the strand stretch test, to find out whether your hair needs protein, moisture or neither right now. You get a simple plan for your next wash day.

How to do the strand stretch test

  1. Take a hair: pick a single shed strand from your brush or comb.
  2. Wet it: run it under water or dip it in a glass of water.
  3. Stretch gently: hold both ends and pull slowly.
  4. Watch what happens: a healthy strand stretches a little and bounces back. Stretching a lot without bouncing back points to a protein need. Snapping right away points to a moisture need.

What causes a protein or moisture imbalance?

Bleach, color, relaxers and heat styling break down the protein in hair, so chemically treated hair often needs more protein. Too much protein, from frequent keratin treatments, bond builders or rice water, can leave hair stiff and brittle until moisture is added back. Using only rich masks and oils with no protein can do the opposite and leave hair limp and overly stretchy. Hair porosity plays a part too: high porosity hair loses moisture faster, so it often needs both.

How to keep the balance

Think of it as a see-saw rather than a fixed type. Most people need moisture every week and a little protein now and then. Change one thing at a time, give it two washes and check again with the stretch test. If you are not sure where your hair sits, the hair porosity test and the hair type quiz help you pick products that suit it, and our guide to frizzy hair explains the habits that dry hair out.

How do I know if my hair needs protein or moisture? −
Do the strand stretch test. Wet a shed hair and stretch it gently. If it stretches a lot without bouncing back, it needs protein. If it snaps almost right away, it needs moisture.
What does protein overload feel like? −
Hair feels hard, stiff, dry or straw-like and snaps easily. Stop protein products and use a moisturizing deep conditioner for a few weeks.
What does too much moisture feel like? −
Hair feels soft but limp, mushy or gummy, stretches too far when wet and will not hold a style. A protein treatment usually helps.
How often should I use a protein treatment? −
For most hair, about once a month is enough. Bleached or heavily colored hair may need it every two weeks. Always follow it with a conditioner.
Is rice water protein or moisture? −
Rice water contains protein and starch, so it acts more like a protein treatment. If your hair gets stiff after using it, cut back.
Can hair need protein and moisture at the same time? −
Yes. Damaged, high porosity hair often needs both. Use a light protein treatment, then a moisturizing conditioner in the same wash.
